Don't ignore these Early Warning Signs of Exposure to Toxic Mold

Late in 2005, Dr. Ed Close, was contacted by a long-time engineering client and asked to do mold sampling, as well as sampling for other constituents of concern, at a piece of property the client had purchased and was renovating. The property, a 48-unit apartment complex, had been flooded, evacuated, and then left vacant for some time before the new owners acquired the property.

Extensive renovations were undertaken including removal of mold infested and mold contaminated materials, cleaning by a professional service from the St. Louis area, and additional cleaning with bleach water and a hospital disinfectant. Samples were taken and indicated extremely high levels of mold remained present in most of the apartments.

Dr. Close recommended that the client have the apartments cleaned again with an industrial strength fungicide. Following that, Dr. Close took more samples and mold counts remained high in many apartments, including high levels of Stachybotrys chartarm, a mold that was of particular concern because it had been linked with many potential health problems, including bleeding lungs and memory loss.

Dr. Close was at a loss as to what to recommend to his clients and was discussing this with his wife over breakfast one morning. Jacquelyn Close, a Registered Aromatherapist, had been using essential oils for about 10 years at the time. She suggested he do a test to see if the oils, which she knew had been shown to have antifungal properties in laboratory tests, might work for this problem that nothing else had been able to resolve.

Skeptical and not wanting to risk recommending something so unorthodox to his clients, that he doubted would even work, Dr. Close said you are going to have to show me the science before I will even consider this. Jacquelyn provided him with a large number of scientific papers from respected journals. She selected several promising essential oils and blends of essential oils, or synergies, for the proposed tests.

Dr. Close, after reviewing the documentation, contacted his clients and said he would like to propose a test for an antifungal agent he had found that might work. The clients said they had a lot of money invested in this project and were open to trying anything that might get the property to the point that it could be rented. Dr. Close designed the test to determine whether this was a viable alternative. He was not trying to prove that it worked, but as a scientist and engineer he was simply testing whether it would work. His reputation and livelihood were on the line. Better to know something does not work, than risk your reputation and spend unnecessary time on something “iffy.”

To his surprise and to his clients’ delight, the test proved that one of the essential oil blends was extremely effective. In fact, mold spore counts dropped dramatically after just 24 hours of diffusing this unique blend of essential oils. His clients were impressed, but they said to him: “What if the mold comes back?”

Dr. Close told them he didn’t know what would happen, because this was a test. He went back after 2 weeks to sample for mold again, and to his amazement – even though there had been no further treatment, the spore counts were even lower (See the Results of this Test).

Since December, 2005, over 100 case studies have been completed and documented by Dr. Close. A video of a live seminar was recorded in February, 2006, entitled Toxic Mold – A Breakthrough Discovery, and provides a basic education in what mold is, the health issues linked to mold exposure, and the DVD also details the results of the first 3 case studies performed. In September, 2007, Dr. and Mrs. Close published the book Nature’s Mold Rx, the Non-Toxic Solution to Toxic Mold. In this book, they tell the stories of people who have experienced mold exposure and document 20 case studies completed through July, 2007. Also included in the book are detailed instructions on implementing a 10-Step Protocol developed by Dr. Close for addressing mold in buildings.

Today, Dr. and Mrs. Close primarily spend their time educating people about using the Patent Pending process developed by Dr. Close, are frequent guests on radio and TV, and in training mold remediators in the effective use of the Close Protocol for eliminating mold in buildings.
